098 Jayson Sime

Jayson was raised in poverty, was bullied because of a learning disability, was 75lbs overweight, abused anti-depressants and felt he was wasting his life. Watching his mom raise 6 kids inspired him to tackle his challenges head on and stick with it long enough to succeed. Jayson found yoga and slowly made better health choices. He took ownership of his life. Jayson shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom:
– spend time on self reflection
– when considering a life change, make sure you know the ‘why’
– if you’re committed, resources will come your way and you will accomplish your goals
– face obstacles with a positive outlook
– start with a baby step and don’t get overwhelmed

097 David Ray Ades

When David’s relative passed at an early age, he realized that everyone carries loss, but not everyone talks about it.  Through poetry, he explores that emotional place and connects with people. David also created a safe, supportive, nurturing and non-judgmental mens’ community, where members can be honest and truthful. He shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom:
– approach people with an open heart
– give yourself some attention
– allow time to reflect on your challenges, ask who can help
– find a community where you are valued as an individual

David Adès returned to Australia in 2016 after living for five years in Pittsburgh. He is a Pushcart Prize nominated poet and short story writer and the author of Mapping the World (Wakefield Press/Friendly Street Poets, 2008), the chapbook Only the Questions Are Eternal (Garron Publishing, 2015) and Afloat in Light (UWA Publishing, 2017).

David won the Wirra Wirra Vineyards Short Story Prize (2005). Mapping the World was commended for the Fellowship of Australian Writers Anne Elder Award 2008.

David has been a member of Friendly Street Poets since 1979. He is a former Convenor of Friendly Street Poets and co-edited the Friendly Street Poetry Reader 26. He was also one of a volunteer team of editors of the inaugural Australian Poetry Members Anthology Metabolism published in 2012. His poetry has been published in numerous journals in Australia and the U.S. with publications also in Israel, Romania and New Zealand.

David’s poems have been read on the Australian radio poetry program Poetica and have also featured on the U.S. radio poetry program Prosody. He is one of 9 poets featured on a CD titled Adelaide 9. In 2014 David won the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the Newcastle Poetry Prize. His poems were also Highly Commended in the 2016 Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize and a finalist in the Dora and Alexander Raynes Poetry Prize 2016.

Growing up in the hood of Philadelphia taught Ray to be tough, have grit, appreciate hard work, have tenacity, get up and keep going. His parents, seeking the improve the family’s quality of life, always engaged the family members as a unit. Ray learned that, through teamwork and camaraderie, you can achieve the unthinkable. He uses these life skills to encourage husbands and fathers to lead, love and live. Ray shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom:
