Michelle Cox holds a B.A. in English literature from Mundelein College, Chicago, and is the author of the award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series, as well as the weekly “Novel Notes of Local Lore,” a blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. 
Cox lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three children and is currently hard at work on Book 5 of the series. In her vast free time, she also sits on the Board of the prestigious Society of Midland Authors and is a reviewer for the New York Journal of Books.

056 Carlyn Montes De Oca

After Carlyn’s divorce, she experienced insomnia, anxiety and depression. Initially, her affair with “Ben & Jerry” (as in the ice cream) helped her deal with it. It was actually her strong and deep relationship with her pets that helped her cope, deal, recover and heal. Carlyn is one of the leading experts on animal human health connections. Her advice to those experiencing a loss: become mindful and express gratitude. Carlyn shares this wisdom to pet owners: let’s adjust our mindset to we are the guardians of these animals, our companion animals are so much more than pets, they can be our best health and wellness allies, helping us be more mindful and improve/transform our lives.

CARLYN MONTES DE OCA is an author, speaker, acupuncturist and plant-based nutritional consultant. A former film editor on such movies as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Three Men and a Little Lady, Carlyn holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University in communication arts and a master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Emperor’s College. She is also certified in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutritional Studies at Cornell University. Montes De Oca was voted PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50 and has been a spokesperson for the Guardian Campaign at In Defense of Animals. Today, she is also the founder of The Animal-Human Health Connection, whose focus is to bring awareness to the many powerful ways that animals enhance human health, happiness, and longevity. Montes De Oca lives in Santa Fe with her husband, Ken, an award-winning sound editor, and her beloved rescue animals.

055 Dr. Virginia A. Simpson

Dr. Ginni’s father passed, when she was 12. This loss completely altered her life. Having lost loved ones, she has dedicated her life to bring hope and healing for grieving children and their families. She wrote “A Memoir of Mother-Daughter Love at the End of Life”, which she found incredibly healing. Dr. Ginni shares the following wisdom: talk about death while your loved ones are still alive, when two people communicate with each other, love will win in the end, put yourself in others’ shoes, practice forgiveness, ask for help, choose to be happy about the small things, have fun, be kind and be loving.
Virginia A. Simpson, Ph.D. FT, is a Bereavement Care Specialist with more than 30 years experience working with the dying and grieving. She holds a Fellowship in Thanatology from the Association for Death Education & Counseling (ADEC), and is the Executive Counseling Director for hundreds of funeral homes throughout the United States and Canada. Simpson’s articles have appeared in publications throughout the world.
In an effort to create meaning out of the sudden death of her beautiful stepson, Douglas William (Doug) Simpson in 1991, Dr. Simpson founded The Mourning Star Center, a place of hope and healing for grieving children and their families in Palm Desert, California in 1995. For ten years, she trained all grief facilitators and led every support group for grieving children, teens, parents, and spouses.
Dr. Simpson is the author of the multi-award winning first book, The Space Between: A Memoir of Mother-Daughter Love at the End of Life published by She Writes Press in April 2016.
