054 Patti Clark

Patti was raised in a dysfunctional family. She found herself surrounded by alcohol, drugs and the loss of her mom. Her life seemed focused on destruction. All she wanted was to be loved and cared for. Patti feels that her decision to travel with Jeff (then boyfriend, now spouse) saved her life. It felt like divine intervention. Patti turned her life around. She didn’t want to repeat the mistakes of her mom and wanted to be completely present. 053 Betsy Graziani Fasbinder

Betsy married a gentleman, who was a widow with a young child.  She loved her new family, but saw they may need time/space to heal from their loss.  Betsy realized that “love and loss live side by side”.  She also lost 3 loved ones, due to suicide.  This taught Betsy that new things can grow even after a loss, such as a more affectionate family.  Her “platinum rule” is to do unto others what they want done.  Betsy also reminds us to:  seek a trusted confidant/advisor, don’t try to figure it all out on your own, learn from others, get wiser and read books.

Betsy Graziani Fasbinder became a second mother to her first son when she married his widowed dad. Filling Her Shoes: A Memoir of an Inherited Family is a series of snapshots of the moments of becoming a second mother to a little boy whose first had been taken. This is a sweet-bitter, happy-ending story of family, revealing that love and loss, grief and gratitude are not opposites, but co-habitants in any family and that patterns of past family abuse can be broken. Betsy is also the author of the critically acclaimed novel, Fire & Water, and has been a licensed psychotherapist in California since 1992.

052 Barbara Santarelli

As a child, Barbara felt like an outsider, didn’t belong, lacked self esteem, had misguided goals, felt empty and was competing with everyone for everything. She had an AHA moment: we buy things that we can’t afford to impress people that we don’t care about. At 50, she needed to flee her life. So, she signed up for 300mi bike ride, which became the vehicle that enabled part 2 of her life. Barbara reminds us to be true to ourselves, to make small changes if we are unhappy, to belong to ourselves and to something bigger than ourselves. Each day, we have an opportunity to try something new, pursue new interests that are exciting and create an opportunity to share with others.

Barbara Santarelli. R.N., B.S.H.C.A has been an actively employed nurse more than four decades.
