137 Barbara Stark-Nemon

Barbara shares the story of her great aunt, who lived through the horrors of two World Wars. Her aunt chose resilience, found love in the most unlikely circumstances and shared that love abundantly with others. Barbara shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom:
– choose resilience
– your resilience can be a beacon for others
– build it and it will come
– choose to find authentic relationships and to live the life that you want to live
– believe that you have the power to do it
– choose the person you want to be as opposed to being defeated by experiences
– we all have stories
– listen deeply to others’ stories
– we can choose how we react
– give yourself permission to feel what you feel
– the mouth laughs, while the heart cries

Every story needs a narrator and she stepped up early in life. She learned storytelling, and a fascination with the magic of language from her grandfather. He wove unforgettable tales of a former life in Germany to his family in America. She spent most of her childhood with her nose in a book, or flying around the neighborhood on her bicycle, and learned to speak the languages of her German family, and later, the signs of the deaf children with whom she worked. An undergraduate degree in English literature and Art History and a Masters in Speech-language Pathology from the University of Michigan led to her teaching and clinical career. Everywhere, there were stories. She’s come to appreciate the way different languages impact the form of narratives, and the need to be heard and seen that we all share. She lives and writes in Ann Arbor and Northport, Michigan.

Listen here.

Author, Linda Atwell and Husband John

Linda, the mother of a daughter with special needs, walked the 500 mile Camino de Santiago. She realized that it’s about the journey, not the destination. The experience taught Linda to leave her burdens behind and she began to feel more at peace. She shares these powerful nuggets of wisdom:

– turn around and see how far you’ve come
– let go
– some things are outside of our control
– take one day at a time
– you don’t have to solve everything now
– decide not to give up
– pause and take a look behind you
– every step towards a goal is a step in the right direction

Linda Atwell lives in Silverton, Oregon with her husband, John. They have two incredible adult children. Linda earned her BA from George Fox College, but it is her entrepreneurial and adventuresome spirits that have inspired her career goals. She owned a successful home décor business for ten years before switching to adjusting catastrophe insurance claims and climbing roofs for a living. Now she writes. Her award-winning work has appeared in print and online magazines. She irregularly writes a blog about her daughter with special needs, travel, and other life adventures. Her first book, Loving Lindsey: Raising a Daughter with Special Needs was released by She Writes Press in September 2017. Linda is happiest traveling the world, and hopes to get fifty stamps in her passport before it expires.
